The Monkees Davy Jones has died suddenly of a heart attack,.aged 66.
He was born David Thomas Jones in Manchester in 1945.
Jones was an actor appearing in Theatre and recording musical material prior to auditioning for the Monkees.
The Monkees was a 1960’s TV show featuring a fictional band and the exploits of Jones, Mickey Dolenz, Peter Tork and Michael Nesmith.
Jones was brought in specifically as the.British connection to ape the Beatles US popularity.
Put together as a cash in on the success of the Beatles, the Monkees showcased songs between their madcap events every week.
On their songwriting team were such future big names as Neil Diamond.
Due to their initial lack of involvement in the music side, the Monkees were dubbed ‘the Prefab 4″ by the press. This was a sideways swipe at them, as the Beatles were known as the ‘Fab 4′.
Later, the quartet took over the musical direction of the group and after the shows cancellation, they toured as a proper band.
After the Monkees split and inbetween revivals, Jones continued to act and race horses.
With hits such as I’m A Believer, Daydream Believer, Last Train To Clarksville, Mary, Mary and Stepping Stone, Jones and the rest of the groups place in musical hall of fame is well assured.
