The Santa Catarina Civil Police is investigating the case of a 9-month-old baby, whose death was confirmed by a municipal hospital in the city of Correia Pinto (interior of the state), in the early hours of last Saturday, the 19th, but hours later she presented signs of being alive during the wake. The situation is being monitored by the municipal police station.

The city hall states that all its health professionals are constantly guided and trained, but that no one can issue certificates or statements without correctly verifying the patients’ conditions.

Baby Kiara Crislayne de Moura dos Santos was admitted to the Faustino Riscarolli municipal hospital in the early hours of Saturday, around 3am. The team of on-call staff attended to the patient and confirmed the child’s death, Correia Pinto City Hall said in a statement.

Moments later, during Kiara’s wake, around 7pm, the baby reportedly showed vital signs, indicating the possibility of being alive. According to the Fire Department record, a pharmacist was called and, using a child oximeter and stethoscope, determined that there was a weak heartbeat and oxygenation in the child’s blood.

Kiara was taken back to the hospital, where the medical team checked the oximetry and verified that there was a heartbeat and saturation. However, after an electrocardiogram examination, no electrical signs were found and the child was once again confirmed dead.

The city of Correia Pinto regretted what happened, and said, in a note, that “under no circumstances, can any professional issue certificates or statements without due verification of the patient’s conditions”.

“All healthcare professionals are constantly guided and trained, ensuring that people’s lives and well-being are always the priority,” he added.

The municipal administration also informed that the General Director of the Hospital Foundation Faustino Riscarolli called the General Institute of Expertise, which will analyze the case and publish a conclusive report on the child’s death within 30 days.

The Civil Police of Santa Catarina declared that the Correia Pinto PD opened an investigation to determine the causes and possible responsibilities for the episode. “As this is an extremely delicate situation and involves a baby, the PCSC will not be releasing details about the progress of the investigation at this time.”
